The Government Data Strategy provides a shared direction for the government data system of Aotearoa NZ.

The data system strategy has four focus areas which each have outcomes. The focus areas are data, capability, infrastructure, and leadership.
The strategy also has principles which outline the way work to implement the Strategy should be done.
The strategy is underpinned by a responsibility to uphold Te Tiriti and a commitment to maintaining and enhancing public trust and confidence. These concepts are fundamentally important to all work to implement the Strategy.
The Government Data Strategy applies to all government agencies in Aotearoa NZ.
It does not include responsibilities for regional and local government, private sector organisations or the general public.
Narrowing the scope makes a higher level of accountability possible for the government of Aotearoa NZ.
Currently, a lack of integration between government services means New Zealanders may be required to provide the same information to multiple agencies to access services. There is limited visibility of what information agencies hold about New Zealanders and how it is used.
Where data is visible and usable, it can contain gaps. This makes it harder for people to access information or insights about things that are important to them. Combined with current data system settings, this lack of visibility also means the rights and interests of Māori and iwi are not realised.
The Government Data Strategy will be brought to life through principles adapted from the Data Protection and Use Policy, the Mana Ōrite relationship agreement between Stats NZ and the Data Iwi Leaders Group, and the Public Service Act.
