Open Data Day is an annual, global celebration of open data. Groups from around the world create and participate in local events to use and explore open data in their communities. It’s an opportunity to show the benefits of open data and encourage the adoption of open data policies in government, business, and civil society.
NZ celebrations: 2020 | 2019 | 2018 | 2017
Stats NZ hosted its second Open Data, Open Potential event in Wellington on 6 March. We heard about fighting corruption in Colombia with open data, using open data to make social impact in Christchurch, putting ‘open by design’ into practice in Hamilton, and what next for open data.

Stats NZ held its first Open Data, Open Potential event in Wellington to celebrate open data day. At the event we witnessed the Minister of Statistics and the Government Chief Data Steward co-sign New Zealand’s Open Data Charter letter, and heard about innovations using open data.
