Tēnā koe OIA request 22/23 0657 Request for data on the number of registered dogs Thank you for your Official Information Act (Act) request received by the Department of Internal Affairs (Department) on 22 March 2023. You requested – * Current Number of registered dogs per Regional Councils in New Zealand. Information including rural or urban location would be very useful. In response to your request I can advise that the information requested is available on the following website, https://www.localcouncils.govt.nz/lgip.nsf/wpg_URL/Profiles-Local-Government-Statistical-Overview-Dog-Control-Statistics. Therefore, I must refuse your request pursuant to section 18(d) of the Act; that the information requested is or will soon be publicly available. It may be helpful for me to explain that local councils maintain the information held on the National Dog Database, established by The Department. As such the above data can only be broken down by council and not based on locations such as rural or urban. This is because the Department does not have the tools to determine whether an address is rural or urban. As this information may be of interest to other members of the public, the Department has decided to proactively release a copy of this response on the DIA website. All requestor data, including your name and contact details, will be removed prior to release. The released response will be made available here: https://www.dia.govt.nz/Official-Information-Act-Requests-2. You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
