Hi, I am looking for borehole data from 2001 till now. Specifically done in and around Pigeon Rock SIte in the Cromwell to Frankton Corridor. Is all borehole data done anywhere in NZ recorded and kept with you? I work at NZTA, and am looking for the borehole data for work done by Opus form 2001 and all borehole data till 2024. Ideally it would be good to be able to access all borehole data from New Zealand. There does not seem to be any avenues that have this information, which is vital to infrastructure and construction work for NZTA and NZ in general.
We are scoping for works to be done in and around that region and require the borehole data to do so.
Giving access to NZTA, which needs and uses historic data in its operations.

RE: OIA 0030076 Thank you for your request of 12 March 2026 regarding the availability of borehole data for the Cromwell to Frankton Corridor, including the Pigeon Rock site, and for your interest in national access to borehole records. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is the steward of the New Zealand Geotechnical Database (NZGD), a crowd-sourced platform designed for sharing specialist geotechnical information nationwide. The NZGD serves as a comprehensive web-based repository for geotechnical data, encompassing borehole logs, CPTs, test pits, and laboratory results. It has evolved from the regional Canterbury and Auckland Geotechnical Databases and now acts as the primary national platform for geotechnical information exchange across New Zealand. While the NZGD houses a substantial and expanding collection of borehole and related geotechnical records, please note the following important points: • The NZGD does not contain a complete or exhaustive record of all boreholes drilled throughout New Zealand. • Data submission is generally voluntary and depends on whether project owners or consultants choose (or are required by their client) to upload their data. • Consultant-owned data, including legacy Opus investigations, remains subject to intellectual property and client ownership considerations, as outlined in the user terms and agreement. MBIE does not directly own datasets uploaded into the NZGD; however, information may be hosted within the platform where permission has been granted by the data owner. • You may find relevant borehole records already available in the NZGD for the Cromwell-Queenstown-Frankton area, depending on past contributions. As the steward of NZGD, MBIE continues to collaborate with central and local government, asset owners, and industry stakeholders to enhance national coverage and consistency of geotechnical data, recognising its significance for infrastructure planning and risk-informed decision-making. Data.govt.nz hosts a GIS layer that publishes a subset of fields from publicly released geotechnical investigations. Full investigation details are accessible only via the NZGD website. Access to full record data requires registration and acceptance of the NZGD Terms of Use. For further information, please refer to: • NZGD Investigations Dataset • To apply for access to the NZGD, visit www.nzgd.org.nz In so far as the information you have requested is publicly available, I am refusing under section 18(d) of the Act (which relates to the refusal of requests where information requested is publicly available). I trust this information is of use to you. If you need further information, please reach out to us at OIA@mbie.govt.nz. You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602. Nāku noa, nā Dave Gittings Manager Building Performance and Engineering
