Government Data System Future Design Narrative

Government design system

In late 2022, the first iteration of the Government Data System Future Design Narrative was produced on behalf of the Government Chief Data Steward. It reflects thinking that began around three years ago, that started with a very simple question: If we were to design a data system more deliberately, what would it look like?

We have taken a strong Te Ao Māori lens to this work to ensure it carefully considers our obligations to iwi-Māori in the context of Te Tiriti. Alongside other work underway, it will usefully inform future thinking.

The future design narrative isn’t policy. It’s a working document that represents an early-stage ideation of what the Aotearoa New Zealand government data system could look like in future, and it considers entities contributing to wider data systems, including private sector, NGOs, tertiary institutions, government, iwi, and other community groups.

As we develop our future design thinking and consider what, and how, shifts and changes might be applied to our data system, we look forward to engaging with individuals, private and public agencies, iwi-Māori, and all those with an interest in the work and where it might lead.

In the meantime, the first iteration of the narrative is available to read now.
